Mutation 6 - Gray

The gray gene is a single recessive gene that acts in chocolate, chestnut, fawn or ino backgrounds. It modifies these colors. In fact, it can be put into all colors except albino. In chocolate the result is a dark gray bird with no red overtones. In the European black browns it shows the least effect but a grayish sheen can be seen running down the back of the bird and the "redness" in a normal chocolate disappears in a black brown. Chestnut grays are a nice graphite color while fawn grays are a softer pale gray. When combined with ino you can get an off-white grayish bird called a "grayino". Pictures of combinations of mutations (e.g. fawn gray, gray ino) are presented later.
