The Japanese are responsible for the development and refinement of many frilled mutations in society finches. Until my recent importation from Japan with Garrie Landry and Shimpei Taniguchi, the only feather mutation in societies that was available in the USA was the crested head type. Below is a detailed description of the Japanese terminology for the frills and what we know of their inheritance. I am most pleased with my breeding efforts with frills but still have a lot to learn to get a higher pecentage of birds that meet the standard for the frill. Many Americans find the frills ugly while others find them cute or curious. In Japan, where pushing the limit of domestication is a national past time with pets, great effort and pride is evident in their frill breeding programs.
