Making eggfood (continued)

This blended egg mixture is put in a large bowl. To it, start adding a 2:1 mix of unflavored bread crumbs and corn meal (NOT the self-rising cornmeal since this has baking soda in it). Slowly add this by forking it into the processed eggs pushing the lumps through the fork. Keep doing this until you reach an unpasty consistency like graham cracker crumb crust. It should take about 1/2 pound of the dry mixture to get the consistency correct. It should almost pour from the bowl if it is soft and crumbly.

This is my basic egg food mix given to non-breeding birds once to two times per week. To this, powdered vitamins, Petamine, Vionate, cuttlebone dust, or other items can be added if this fits into your program (e.g. Are the birds breeding? Do you never use liquid vitamins?). Put the eggfood in a zip lock bag laid on its side and seal it trying to exclude most of the air. When you need some just break off a piece and defrost it. I do that at night and put it in the frig for the morning. It can be served directly from the frig without warming it to room temperature if you are in a rush to get to work. I've done this for years with no obvious problems.

Lately I have also been using an eggfood mixture designed by Roy Beckham. You can go to www.efinch.com to find this recipe and other helpful hints. Roy tells me he may be changing his recipe soon to make it easier and cheaper. So check out his web page to see what's up.
