Hospital Cage

A Dutch finch breeder was once quoted as saying "A sick finch is a dead finch". While this may not always be true, it often is! Nevertheless, in some cases (e.g. eggbinding, air-sac mites) it is frequently possible to bring the birds back to health if you start the care before the condition is chronic. Everyone should keep a smalll hospital cage where a bird can be isolated. Heat is essential to sick birds. An easy solution is to install a 100 watt ceramic heater (the type for reptiles) on the side of the cage so the bird can adjust its temperature by moving closer. Make sure he can escape the heat by moving down the perch away from the heater. If a bird has troble perching shallow food and water trays should be placed on the floor of the cage.
