Leg Banding (using closed bands continued) Note: For the next few pages, images may take time to load but for clear viewing of banding, I did not reduce their size. In order to close band at the appropriate stage of development, you should make a note of the date the baby is born. Closed-banding is generally done about 8-10 days after birth. By then, the baby is getting pin feathers on the wings and the tail feathers are emerging. The bones are still soft and unless you are careless should not be injured. To band the baby, carefully remove it from the nest box. Either sit on the floor or in a chair so that if the baby is dropped it will land on your lap and not the floor.
