Seed 1. General Seed Mix Finches will eat of variety of seed. It is important to give them a balanced diet since some kinds of seed (e.g. thistle or niger) are fatty and may be consumed in excess quantities. If they eat too much of fatty seeds they may become overweight, especially if they are in cages rather than large flights. Because I usually have between 70 to 125 finches it is more economical to blend my own seed. If you only have a few finches there are plenty of commercial mixes that are appropriate for your finches. The key is freshness.
