Seed (continued)

Assuming you find fresh seed, the best place to store it is in the freezer (second best is the refrigerator). This will keep out the grain moths (or kill any that might be present) and will keep seed fresher longer. I store my seed in empty soda bottles. If you use a storage bin make sure it is air tight or grain moths might get in. If you freeze seed, make sure to warm the seed to room temperature (I take mine out at least a day before using it) before feeding it to the birds. My blend (photo of seed types) consists of :

  • 50 lbs of white millet
  • 10 lbs of finch millet (German or yellow millet)
  • 10 lbs of canary seed
  • 5 lbs of Japanese millet
  • 1/2 lb of thistle (niger)
  • 1/2 lb of hemp seed
  • 1/2 lb sweet brown rice (organic store)
