Vitamins A good varied diet and fresh seed will provide adequate vitamins for many species. As aviculturists, however, we do not know the exact diet of every species and it is better to err on the side of a bit too much vitamins than to have a dietary deficiency that will cause breeding problems and make the bird more susceptible to stress and pathogens. It is recommended that vitamin supplements be given to your birds. Some finch owners prefer to add vitamins to water. While this assures that some are ingested, there is also the risk of bacterial contamination since vitamin water is a prime breeding ground for microbes. If you choose to vitaminize your water the solution should be changed after 8 hours, sooner in warm temperatures. I choose to use powdered vitamins and add it too my softfoods. Your choice of vitamins is great. Some are very expensive and probably not worth the cost. The choice is yours (until I get a paying sponsor :-) |
