candling - shining a focused beam of light on an egg to see if it has been fertilized. About 5 days after incubation (not 5 days after laying) has commenced red veins can should be visible in the yolk. These veins are connections from the embryo to the nutritive tissue of the yolk. In late stages of incubation, candling reveals opaque eggs which eventually look bluish black. These eggs have nearly mature embryos. Candling should be done as unobtrusively as possible and as infrequently as is necessary.
