cuttlebone - the skeleton of a sea creature that is dried and used as a calcium supplement (also contains phosphorous and other trace minerals) and beak sharpener by birds. Every finch cage should contain at least one easily accessible cuttlebone. Cuttlebone can also be scraped with a fork and the dust sprinkled into soft food, such as egg food. It should be changed if it becomes fouled with droppings or they birds have much of the soft parts so that only the hard part (which should be facing the back of the cage) remains.
