dominant trait - a trait that is inherited in the first generation. Although traits like large size might be considered dominant, the normal use of this term is restricted to factors controlled by only one gene. Many factors (size, posture, head shape, etc.) are multigenic traits inherited in a quantitative way. A bird carrying a dominant trait for a single gene can not mask the trait. An example is the red head color in normal body color Gouldian finches.
