Amorphophallus konjac
'Nightstick'

'Nightstick' leaf petiole on the left, normal
A. konjac on the right

Now for something completely different . 'Nightstick' was sent to me by Plant Delight's Nursery in North Carolina. It is AMAZING. The petiole is like the skin of an eggplant - shiny, deep purple to black with NO pink and NO spots. Younger plants do show a bit of greenish purple in the petiole but as the plant becomes bigger each year the petiole darkens even more. To the amateur it does not even look like konjac but it is just as easy to grow. 'Nightstick' produces a stocky plant with a less divided leaf than cultivars like 'Leo Song Variant'.
