Oxalis regnelli (aka O. triangularis var. purpurea
or even O. regnelli
var. triangularis)

Stunning dark purple leaves with central regions that are lighter violet color. One of the nicest plants for patio potting that you can find. Does best in broken shade or with early morning full sun. Tiny bulbs erupt in spring with three leaf clovers and attractive pink blooms. At night the leaves fold down into little pyramids. Looks great planted in cobalt blue planters. Likes evenly moist organic soil and routine fertilization. Probably winter hardy Zone 7b. For those (like me) in colder climates just bring it indoors in the fall, stop watering it to let it go dormant and store until spring in a cool basement. UPDATE: Scroll down to see the new cultivar called 'Mijke' !! Wonderful color - solid bright purple red.

Leaf of 'Mijke' - a sight to behold.

shocking color 'Mijke' on the right
