How
to Show Birds
Showing birds is
not difficult if you get prepared well ahead of time. About
4 months prior to the show select the birds you wish to show
and, if possible, place them singly in cages or at least in
small groups. Getting a bird in condition is time-consuming
and you do not want bickering to lead to broken, split, or
missing feathers. Keeping the birds calm will avoid some of
the wear and tear on the feathers. Bathing is an important
part of feather conditioning so you might want to give the
selected birds extra baths. One a day won't hurt! About 2
months before the show, check the length of the nails. If
they are getting long you should cut them so that a new
point will develop. Judges will subtract points for freshly
cut nails that look unatural. You may wish to "cage train"
the finch by getting him use to the show cage. This can be
done a day here and there the week before the show or by
placing the bird in the show cage 24 hours before going to
the show. By doing so, you may score more points for
"deportment".
Let us assume
you now have some birds ready to show. What about the show
procedure itself?
