How to Show Birds (continued) When you arrive at the show you will need to register the birds. It usually costs somewhere around $2.00 per bird. This helps defray the cost for all the ribbons you will take home! You will receive some tags to put on the cage. These assist the show steward (the person who handles the cages for the judge) in categorizing the bird in its division, class, etc. You will receive a show booklet that has all the categories in it. For each type of bird, age is taken into consideration. If you bird is closed banded with the band year the same as the show year, it is a "young" or "unflighted" bird. If it has no dated leg band, or has a date earlier than the present year, it is "old" or "flighted". Look for the number that corresponds to your type of bird and put the number and description on your tag. For example, on this page, I have circled the number (#507) for a self fawn society finch that is older than the current year. This number goes on your cage tag. When your show cages are all tagged, you give them to the show steward who arranges them on a bench prior to the judge's arrival. |
